Shaw Nature Reserve, located on Old Route 66 off I-44 (take exit 253 and watch for the directional signs) in Gray Summit, is once again hosting Prairie Day. This year, the event is being held on Saturday, September 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $3 for SNR members and $5 for non-members. The fee for children 12 years and younger is $1.

This unique event will allow you to take a naturalist led hike through the tall grass prairie, check out the sod house, and a teepee. Visit a buffalo hunter, a blacksmith, or numerous other re-enactors,and crafters. Try your hand at candle making, quilting, tomahawk throwing, carving, or fling knapping.

Listen to ole time music and a story teller. See live animals, maybe hold one or take a pony ride. If you get hungry, check out the food vendors and perhaps try a bison burger or some yummy home-made baked goods.

The event is sponsored by the Shaw Nature Reserve and the Missouri Department of Conservation. Shaw Nature Reserve is a 2,500 acre landscape developed to preserve and educate people about native plants, animals, and ecosystems.

For more information visit the SNR website: www.shawnature.org or call 636-451-3512.

Pacific will celebrate the annual Railroad Day Festival on Saturday, October 9 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Pacific Station Plaza on South First St. Many activities are planned for the event including a short stop of Union Pacific Railroad’s large steam locomotive, UP 3985.

Family fun, arts & crafts, music, food, and much more are planned for the Railroad Day Festival. If you are interested in being a vendor, contact Monica at 314-440-2929 or beaconcarwash@aol.com or Jenni at jennylou63069@yahoo.com. Vendor set-up begins at 8 a.m.

Regarding the UP 3985 steam locomotive, the train's engine, tender, water car, and nine passenger cars will stop in the vicinity of First Street crossing in downtown Pacific, arriving at 10:00 AM and be available for viewing during its 15 minute stop. This arrangement is being made possible by the Pacific Partnership and the City of Pacific.

Jim Schwinkendorf, a Partnership Board Director and a retired Burlington Northern Railroad executive, has made the arrangements with UP’s Steve Lee, Superintendent of Heritage Operations. The engine is normally based out of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Union Pacific Challenger 3985 was designed by Union Pacific and built in 1943 by the American Locomotive Company. It is one of 105 Challengers built for Union Pacific between 1936 and 1943 and is the only operating engine of its class in the world today – the largest and most powerful operating steam locomotive. Its visit will mark the first time a steam locomotive has stopped in Pacific since the final run of Frisco engine 1522 in 2002.

So mark your calendar for the October 9th visit, and plan to see a remarkable piece of railroad history during its visit. For more information on the train, contact Jim Schwinkendorf at 636-271-8316 or jaschwink@aol.com.
